Bennett Mechanical
Comprehension Test
This assessment aids in the selection and placement of applicants and trainees in mechanical, technical, and manufacturing jobs.
A high score on the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (BMCT) reflects the ability to learn the principles of operation and repair of complex devices. BMCT scores tend to be related to measures of spatial perception and tool knowledge, but are relatively independent of manual dexterity.
The examinee responds to 68 items, each requiring the application of physical law or a mechanical operation. The test items are presented in terms of simple, frequently encountered mechanisms that do not resemble textbook illustrations or require special knowledge.
The first forms of BMCT were prepared for use in the U.S. military and many of the Allied countries. After some 50 years of research and use, eighteen new norm tables were added based on 8,992 cases collected in 1993 and 1994. Some occupational groups for which criterion-related information is reported include chemical plant workers, steel plant workers, mechanics, production workers, coal miners, utility company workers, and aviation workers.
